I've been backpacking in the Sierra for 40+ years and have learned a thing or 2 in that time. I like to share advice so that others can learn from my mistakes. I love the outdoors and like to share trip reports to inspire others to get out there. I'm also a certified arborist so I throw in a few videos about the Sierra trees I love. I don't take myself too seriously so neither should you. Work is something I do to pay for vacations in the great outdoors!
The Narrows - Zion National Park
A trip up the 10 mile no permit required section of the Narrows. Crowded but still great fun and nice and cool in the canyon.

Did a nice 4 mile hike to the falls after a morning of fishing in the Crystal Basin. Sorry for the quality. My GoPro battery was dead. This was all done on an iPhone but still this beautiful hike looks good. BIG crowds here on weekends so try to go early or on weekdays!
2024 JMT Snow Report
Просмотров 5552 месяца назад
Sierra backcountry snow report for 2024. It's going to be a good year with the snow totals so far right around 100% of average. It's always an unknown how fast the passes will clear out but barring any strange weather mid July should be good. Any earlier for high elevation trips it would be a good idea to check with a local ranger station on conditions. Enjoy the amazing high Sierra and be care...
Minimizing Muscle Soreness from Hiking
Просмотров 3272 месяца назад
Some tips on reducing muscle soreness on long hikes and backpacking that work for me. There are lots of different things people do but this works pretty good for me. Of course the best thing you can do is be in good hiking shape but sometimes we get too busy and it's hard at the start of the hiking season to be in hiking shape. Happy trails & pain free hiking!

Bassi Falls Trail

This easy 4 mile round trip hike near desolation wilderness in the Crystal Basin is a fun hike for almost anyone. Obviously much better in the spring when the spring snowmelt is at its peak. Also can make a fun winter snowshoe hike since SMUD plows the access roads in the winter.
Staying Hydrated Hiking & Backpacking

Staying hydrated on a hike is more important than many people realize. It affects your bodies' performance and how good you feel while you are out on the trails. Drink up!

Meiss Meadow trailhead to Stevens Peak

On July 7th Trainwreck, myself and Abbey wandered around the Carson Pass area and had a great day exploring and bagged Stevens Peak. The wildflowers are out and the snow is melting so why are you watching this when you can be out there! Happy Trails!
Shakedown Hikes before a JMT or PCT...

Let's talk about the benefits of a shakedown backpacking trip before departing on a longer multi day / week hike like a JMT or PCT hike. Checklists are fine but not as good as a real backpacking trip to get you dialed in. Sorry it was a windy day.
2023 JMT & PCT River Crossings
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.Год назад
It's June 2nd 2023 and I just want to give a heads up to Sierra Hikers about our high snow year and what it has done to the trails. Several important High Sierra bridges have washed out. With so much snow still to melt, the rivers will be running high all summer making river crosses dangerous and possibly deadly. Check ahead for the latest conditions and work arounds around these dangerous cros...

That's great! I like to travel.
I thought you were not supposed to run after knee replacement!
An occasional short spurt of running is ok but sustained longer running / jogging puts a lot of pressure on your hardware which can lead to wear or early failure. I can’t sit still and have to remind myself to not do too much that puts too much pressure on my knees.
What a gorgeous view! I can do with a little tweeking compared to what I am going through now pre surgery lol!
I can't take narcotics, surgery is scheduled for Sept. Think I'll live through it?
You can do it and it will be worth it!
Thank you for posting! I love the narrows hike. I hope to get back there soon.
Get to the shuttle stop early! It is awesome and I’m happy so many enjoy it.
Wow, that was FANTASTIC !!!!!!!! Thanks for taking us along with you. Loved it ❤❤❤❤
Yowser... APEMAN only has 5k Viewers??? Somethings just Don't make Sense.... Thank you for your Efforts!!!!!
I know right! Tell your friends! RUclips has always just been a hobby and a place to post my stuff for friends to see and I was surprised by how so many wanted to watch some old guy with bad knees walk around! 😂
@@ApeMan Im a Baby Boomer Tambien..... I will do so... Appreciate your Efforts......
Wish I was there too so I could have learned from you to identify all those trees types.
I lived in New Mexico. At least there, the Ponderosa pines also smelled of vanilla. Thanks for the other tips to differentiate them, though. Here in California I would confuse them until what I learned from your video.
Zion is something truly unique and special! Bravo for this epic hike man!
Wow that's lovely , thanks for taking us along . Can you please do more videos like this ? ❤❤
Appreciate the video but blur your house out the video.
Thanks Ape Man! Inspirational.
How are your knees right now? After 4years? Please please update
Both knees are fantastic and pain and swelling free. I’m hard on them with lots of hiking with 0 problems!
What lake is this?
Ice House Reservoir
Great content. Used to live in Loomis several years ago. Love those valley oaks. Up in Montana now. Totally different climate as you can imagine. There is a Burr Oak here which is interesting. Good on you for filming this.
Thanks Stu! Loomis is great but so is Montana! Enjoy!
Great to see you...at what age were u diagnosed with arthritis?
In my 40’s but in my case it probably occurred at a younger age due to injuries and heavy use
Sweet!! Headed to Desolation in july..hopefully water levels down a bit.
im barely 3 months from dual TKR and right now it still sucks
Hang in there! Hope things get better over time for you!
apeman, where in yosemite might i find this tallest sugar pine u talk about? might have to take up a confier pilgrimage to that site
You gotta make more of these for all the trees. Super helpful. I wanna be you when I grow up.
Thank you 512 subscribers ❤keep supporting ❤
How are your knees doing with hikes ?
Knees are great and no problems!
hi apeman, good to see you well and hikin! where would u recommend fishing in the crystal basin???
I like Loon and Icehouse for shore fishing which I do. Fish on!
Beautiful, that noise of the water , Thanks for sharing ❤
Have good summer 🤩
very nice - as always, i'm jealous :) - i'll bet that water is cold!
One of my favorite hikes in the spring!
So skinny Ape Man
Lovec I it
Leaving next weekend thank you for this!
I watch your videos for inspiration. With knee replacements you are an achiever. : from India
Thank you!
Прекрасные сосны, раздобыть бы семена.
Thanks!
I'm 6 weeks out from TKR. I am an avid hiker/backpacker. Do you avoid steep trails ? eg. Would you hike a trail with an average grade of 20 % ?
I have no limitations and frequently climb Sierra peaks and backpack on and off trails. I step a little more carefully but I have no pain and very little swelling. My hiking poles help a lot on those steep sections.
Hi I'm close to them and nearly 7 weeks Post op and I returned to my job thus week and I stand all day also 🤟
Very helpful
Love me some annual Ape Man snow reports.
Thank you! I always look forward to this video each year!
Had this done on March 19. Started doing push-ups 21 days post surgery with handles. Used 90 lb dumbells for deadlifts today, with straps, of course. 😆 Although, I can do shrugs with 60s without them. I have my month check-up tomorrow. Did you have a large hump for a while? Is it still holding up well? Thank you for your video!
Congrats on your recovery! Yes I had that hump but it went away. I’m still doing great with no pain or swelling and I don’t even think about it anymore.
Good to see you in good health Ape Man. I missed your JMT report this year, any chance we can get your analysis?
I will get a snow report out soon. Sierra snow totals are slightly above 100% so it looks like a good year for the jmt and the passes to clear by late juneish?
thanks for the info - you are looking good - so are the foothills - i start each day with about 40 minutes of stretching - makes the coffee taste even better :)
Stairs are good for flatlanders. Up and down as many times as you can. Find a hospital, tall hotel, or university building and find the stairs.
Good advice! I always try to take the stairs instead of the elevator if I have time.
Approaching 70 and I section hike Appalachian Trail every spring as a test to see how I am aging. Just came back and had Good News & Bad News. Good News: Solved knee problems switching to zero drop shoes (shoes without raised heels, Altra Lone Peak 6) which changes my steps to coming down on my forefoot which causes knee to be bent and leg muscles absorb shock instead of knees, Knees did great, solved, took about 6-7 months for feet to adapt to zero drop shoes. Bad News: This time I am getting weaker, started out doing 12-11 miles a day for first 70 miles, then got weaker, got run down everyday after 9 miles, would have had to step down to 7 miles next if I didn't bail, something wrong. Don't know if 70 is a limit or if there is something I can do to increase strength & endurance. Since I got back home I have been doing 100 squats while wearing 40lb vest.
As we age it takes longer for us to build muscle and endurance. Maybe your body hasn’t adjusted to the new shoes and stride? You are still in great shape so just keep moving and see where the trail leads you! I hope things get better for you as another hiking season approaches.
Good stuff.
Lovely scenery my friend! Shots are just amazing!
Thanks for the great tips for those of us who have had joint replacements. Youre an inspiration for my recovery and training! Thanks!
One of the main reasons I had the knee replacements was to continue hiking and doing the things I love. I’m fortunate they went so well for me. No more knee pain or swelling. Best of luck to you on your journey.
Wow are you looking good !! How did you lose the weight ? I must have missed something. So glad to see you so fit. Have a great time the weather looks amazing. Greetings from Germany
Thanks Annie! I semi retired 3 years ago and started waking 10-15 thousand steps everyday and that’s pretty much it. I lost 50 pounds and 6 inches off my waist just doing that. I eat bad food and drink too much beer but burn enough calories to keep the weight off. I’m just lucky I have good genes and am able to keep the weight off. Sure keeps my knees happy!
OK, you've inspired me again lol. I'm going to do the same starting immediately..... Will let you know I get on. At the moment I'm to heavy 82 kg should be 65kg ish. So you've motivated me.!!! Thanks
Good advice coming from an experienced hiker. You are looking good. May the wild continue to nourish your soul and provide optimal health and enjoyment.
Solid information - Looking good ape!
